Often, what we get from Swiss watch brands in our modern/contemporary watchmaking age are nicely crafted, wearable models that lack fantasy. The all-American concept of easy dressing, or athleisure, has swept the globe, and with that comes the impossible predilection for sports watches. They are \"comfort\" and \"convenience\", dressed up nicely. Which, in my mind's eye, is not that far (spiritually) from high-end activewear. My hope is that watch brands soon realize that they have the power to set the agenda, and they don't have to live in perpetual servitude to consumer demand. Build, and they will come. Like my literary idol, former publisher, editor in chief of Women's Wear Daily, and founding editor of W magazine, John Fairchild, once said in his acerbic and gossipy tome Chic Savages, \"The shape of all fashion begins with the silhouette, but there are only a few designers capable of creating a new silhouette. I was working at the agency that was managing my family's business account, but I wasn't involved in the account and I was hearing them struggle. They weren't being fed the right information; there was a gap within the business itself. And so I went to my dad, and I said, listen, we need to fix this. I made some suggestions, and he told me to come back next week. I went in, and they asked for my suggestions. I'm like, hire someone who has a PR or marketing background so that they can run it. Nothing about Seddiqi as a retailer and how we operate. My cousin Mohammed was there two years before me; he was the only one there working with the second generation, my father, and my uncles. Hammed and I started doing factory tours for clients, taking them to the independents in Switzerland and introducing them to new things. I'd hear the client saying, \"Who is this watchmaker I've never heard of before?\" Or \"Why is this movement like this? I wanna see what's happening inside.\" You know, they were more curious. Plus, we were hearing a lot of conversations between brands when we'd meet with them on the struggles they were all having, but there was no communication between them. We can't solve the industry's problems, but there are things that need to be spoken about, like the transition of knowledge. They didn't have enough watchmakers. The watch was revealed (literally revealed as the curtain was lifted) at 8 PM on the dot in typical Swiss watch-brand fashion. The resulting composite material is speckled with fragments of blue textiles and carbon, creating a distinctive camo effect. A level deeper, the collab is fitting when considering Djokovic's similar l<i>'enfant terrible</i> rep in his world, though I'll leave that to the tennis pundits. The watch also feels pretty safe. A cool hue of blue renders this Unico rather palatable. Sure it's certainly less discreet than your average chronograph but it's tame in comparison to the usual Hublot collab mold.
